Also sad is the apparent disconnect between the giving employers and the receiving employees according to NRG.co.il (Hebrew), quoting a survey by Israeli jobsite JobMaster: 61% of employees would rather receive a free weekend for two at a hotel than the gift certificates they have coming Only 7% of employees will NOT need to make a special request to receive all the presents that their company is giving out In other words, companies are giving more but their giving is almost inconsiderate of employees' desires. Employee loyalty isnt gone, its just different Today, people in their 20s change jobs every two years. This frustrates employers, who say, Why should I hire someone who is going to leave? I need someone who is loyal. At the same time, employees look at the work they are given and say, How can I spend my days doing work that doesnt mean anything to me? Ironically, the way to make your work more meaningful is to be more loyal. This doesnt mean you cant quit in three months. It means that you have to be loyal while you are there. And in this way, the idea of workplace loyalty is changing: Loyalty is not dead, but you have to ask yourself, what are you loyal to? Its a great job market for young people today. Among college graduates the unemployment rate is less than 2 percent. The problem is finding meaningful work. But this task doesnt need to be as hard as people make it. You dont need to be saving lives. You need to work at a place that contributes to your core needs, in a way that gives you the opportunity to express passions in significant ways. One of the most common ways of finding meaning at work is through personal development. Loyalty as a function of time is a dated idea, says Jaerid Rossi, process engineer at Specialty Minerals of Canaan, Conn. Work is only appealing if theres constant learning. But loyalty is a layered concept, and for many this includes the power of a companys brand. Organizations are not a source of security but they are a source of identity, says Bill Taylor, cofounder of the magazine Fast Company and coauthor of the book, Mavericks at Work: Why the Most Original Minds in Business Win. So find a company that you want to attach your identity to. In this way, you are searching for a company that deserves your loyalty. Its brand will be in line with your own values and the image you have of yourself. For example, Steve Rubel runs the blog Micro Persuasion, but he is also an employee at Edelman, a public relations agency that has an image of being forward thinking about technology. Edelman adds a nice element to Rubels identity so it makes sense that Rubel would be loyal. Edelmans success online reaffirms in peoples minds that Im with a company whose values I share, he says. Loyalty doesnt always satisfy image-building, though. For instance you can be loyal to a cause, such as the examples cited by Taylor: People at ING Direct really feel like they are bringing some sense of sanity to an increasingly insane consumer finance culture. In Mavericks at Work, people are loyal to what they want to do in the world. For example, most people at Netflix are true movie fanatics and they believe popular entertainment is better in America because of Netflix. If you want to help homeless kids, you can work at many different types of organizations that fight homelessness, and while you might not feel huge dedication to a particular organization, your enthusiasm to the cause will keep you loyal to the work. You can carry your loyalty from company to company. Taylor explains that People can [also] be loyal to a cause or to a technology. For example, they think Ajax is the greatest software in the world. They can also be loyal to colleagues and team. The common thread in all this loyalty, though, is being part of something bigger than yourself. You cannot give up everything for your company, but being loyal to nothing is equally disconcerting. People are their best when they have obligations not only to themselves, but to other people as well. People do their best work when they identify themselves as part of a team or a project. Rossi echoes this sensibility: For me, the services a company provides must somehow be beneficial to the employees and the community around it. I need to understand what the companys goals are and I need to share that vision. What can employers do to attract new loyalists? Find a mission that they believe in. If they dont believe in it, theyll never be able to convince other people. And remember that people can feel affiliated to an organization without having to work 70 hours a week. In fact, some of the most loyal employees are those whose company arranged working situations to accommodate very strong loyalties such as family or athletic endeavors. Even a company that has little mission to speak of can gain extreme loyalty from employees by easing the employees individual mission. Among Microsoft loyalists, for example, are those who rely on its outstanding insurance coverage for children with autism. So figure out your needs and passions, and cast a wide net for the company that could fill them. Youd be surprised at the number of companies that can make you feel like work is meaningful. Similarly, employers will be surprised at the intense loyalty there is to be had from this generation of job hoppers.

You studied economics, medicine, manufacturing, politics, sales, etc. You worked your way up in your respective field. And then you became a manager and on top of all the experience you have in your specific industry, thereâs now so much more! Whether youâre a new or seasoned manager, your responsibilities can become overwhelming at times. There are days and new situations that will leave you feeling vulnerable and alone. You donât know where to start or even what or who to ask. I spoke with authors Barbara Mitchell, managing partner of The Mitchell Group, and Cornelia Gamlem, president of The GEMS Group LLC, and asked them what new managers can do to maximize success in their management career. Here are nine tips from their most recent book, The Managerâs Answer Book. 1 Always be true to your values and principles â" your belief system. While you may share certain values with other people, yours are unique to you. Honor them and use them as your guide. Make decisions that demonstrate your values and never contradict them in your actions or words. 2 Seek out people with common values. They will bring out the best in you and be a source of sound and ethical advisors. To the extent you can, avoid people who donât share your high standards and donât tolerate behavior based on lower standards. Never allow other people to contradict your values. 3 Always act with self-confidence and donât second guess yourself, but leave yourself open to new ideas and opinions. Maintaining an open mind should not erode your self-confidence. It helps you grow. 4 Maintain a high regard of respect for yourself. You cannot respect other people if you donât respect yourself. Never tolerate actions by others that disrespect you â" or anyone else. Speak up. 5 Respect the people around you â" team members, peers, and leadership members. Demonstrate respect by being on time for meetings, not interrupting, and acknowledging others when you see them. Never disparage the leadership in front of others. If you disagree with something, speak up. ?If you have to vent â" we all do on occasion â" do so privately and to someone who will listen and keep your confidence. 6 Always lead by example. This is not a cliché â" itâs a practice that should guide your behavior. Other people will notice, especially your team and they are the ones who are likely to follow your example and behave similarly. 7 Avoid being judgmental. Youâll make mistakes and so will everyone else. Itâs fine to counsel others, but refrain from criticism. 8 Exercise discretion at all times. Donât engage in speculation or gossip. Never discuss sensitive business information in public places or spaces â" restaurants, bars, or on public transportation for example. You never know who is listening. Wait to make or return phone calls until you can do so in a private place. 9 Respect and keep confidences unless, of course, there is a need to disclose such as information about wrongdoing like harassment or something else that could pose significant risk for the organization. If thatâs not the case, honor your commitment not to share it with anyone. Acting with integrity is one of the most important things that a manager can do. 5 Steps to Make Lasting Connections With Recruiters on Twitter 270 Flares 270 Flares When it comes to making connections with recruiters through social media channels, the line between annoying and impressing is very thin. Today I want to look at Twitter specifically, and provide a few steps for you to not only reach recruiters, but also get on their radar. Here are the 5 steps: Step 1: Find Recruiters to Follow Half the battle is finding a recruiter that is specific to your interests and location. While some recruiters need applicants on a global level, many only search for talent in a specific geographic location. Here are some quick tips for finding recruiters to follow: Use Twitter Search and type in the word Recruiter and your city. Example: Recruiter Philadelphia. Use FollowerWonk.com and click on Search Twitter Bios. Enter the same search string in the example above. Search hashtags for things like #PhillyJobs, #ChicagoJobs, #ITJobs, #BostonRecruiter, and #JobHuntChat. Play around with this until you find the right formula. Recruiters love to follow each other, so go through their following list and youll absolutely find more Recruiters and HR professionals. Oh, and dont forget to click the follow button! Step 2: RT and Share Their Content After following, avoid asking for help immediately. I can guarantee that if you do this right away, theyll be annoyed. However, if they do have a current opening that youre a fit for, then you might want to send a tweet about it. In most cases, youll want to RT and share out their content to your own networks. Start out first by RTing a few times a week, and then possibly once per day. Youll receive a few thank you messages back, and possibly even a question about who you are and what you do. Congratulations, youre on their radar! Step 3: RT and Share Their Open Jobs Even if youre not a fit for their openings, be sure to spread the word and help them fill open jobs theyve posted online. This can go a long way and is similar to the strategy in number two. Simply put, if youre able to help them, they will happily return the favor without you needing to ask. Step 4: Find them on Linkedin and Connect Its perfectly acceptable to find a recruiter on Linkedin and add them to your connections. You can either go right ahead and leave them a connection request on Linkedin, or send a tweet to ask if it would be OK. Either is fine in my honest opinion. Critical Tip: When you connect on Linkedin, make sure to write out a message and delete the standard Linkedin connection text. Remind them that youre from Twitter and provide your Twitter name. Quick example: John, it has been great connecting on Twitter and learning from your tweets. Wanted to network here as well! Rich aka @CornOnTheJob Step 5: Wait For the Perfect Job Maybe it doesnt happen day 1, day 10, or day 50, but eventually theyll post a job through Twitter and/or Linkedin that is perfect for you. If youve done a great job of getting on their radar, sharing their information, and helping them with openings, then you might even be the first person they think of. Just send them a Tweet or Linkedin message to confirm interest and then hang tight while waiting for their response! Please keep in mind that making just one connection with a recruiter through these steps may not be enough. Increase your odds and look to make 5-10 new recruiter friends on Twitter per month. The power in numbers will only help, just make sure they are targeted and the kind of recruiters that you need to be in touch with. Go get em!
